The Indian film industry has lost one of its most cherished and versatile talents. Veteran Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan, widely celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable supporting roles, passed away on September 24, 2026, at the age of 56. His demise has left a significant void in Hindi cinema, bringing an end to a career that spanned over four decades and entertained generations of moviegoers.
Here is a look at the life, career, and legacy of the actor who gave Bollywood some of its most unforgettable characters.
Cause of Death and Final Days
Mushtaq Khan breathed his last at around 7 PM at Mumbai’s Nanavati Hospital, where he had been admitted for the past 15 days. According to his business partner, Shivam Yadav, the actor had been battling lung cancer.
While Khan had previously received treatment and recovered, the cancer tragically relapsed a little over a week before his passing, progressing to its final stage. His health rapidly deteriorated, and he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he spent his final moments.
A Glorious Career Spanning Over Three Decades
Hailing from Baihar in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, Mushtaq Khan’s journey to the silver screen was paved with sheer talent and hard work. He made his acting debut in the 1980 film Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai.
Khan often credited legendary writer Salim Khan for giving him his big break. After watching him perform in a play, Salim Khan was deeply impressed and recommended him to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. This association led to several successful collaborations with Bhatt in the 1990s, including Aashiqui (1990), Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Sadak (1991), and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993).
Over the years, he seamlessly transitioned across genres—from drama to comedy—solidifying his position as one of the most reliable character actors in the industry.

“Meri Ek taang nakli hai, Mai hockey ka bohoth bada khiladi tha.
Ek din Uday bhai ko meri kisi baat pe gussa aagaya aur mere he hockey se meri taang ke do tukde kar diye.
Lekin dil ke bohot ache hai, Fauran mujhe hospital le gaye aur ye nakli taang lagwayi.”#BestMovieLineEver— The Viral Fever (@TheViralFever) August 9, 2019
