In what is being described as one of the most extraordinary acts of courage in modern aviation, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has emerged as a true hero. Operating Flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Machchhar fought off a violent mid-air attack by his co-pilot, saving the lives of nearly 174 passengers and crew members.
Here is a detailed look at the harrowing cockpit attack, the dramatic rescue, and the inspiring bravery of Captain Smit Machchhar.
What Happened on Flydubai Flight FZ1073?
The terrifying ordeal took place on September 30, 2026, aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft en route to Israel. During the flight, a violent altercation broke out in the cockpit when the co-pilot, identified as an Omani national, attacked and stabbed Captain Machchhar in a suspected attempt to crash the plane.
The struggle led to a catastrophic drop in altitude, with flight-tracking data showing the aircraft plunging nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. The rapid descent triggered an emergency signal associated with unlawful interference, leading to a temporary hijack scare.
Despite being severely wounded and covered in blood, Captain Machchhar refused to surrender. In a desperate bid for survival, he managed to unlock the cockpit door, exposing the crisis to the cabin and giving the passengers and crew a chance to intervene.
Passengers and Off-Duty Pilots to the Rescue
The moment the cockpit door opened, Israeli passengers seated near the front rushed in to confront the attacker. One passenger recounted finding the wounded pilot and the attacker struggling over the controls. Together with the cabin crew, the passengers managed to pull the co-pilot out of the flight deck and subdue him.
Crucially, two off-duty pilots who were traveling as passengers stepped in. Once the attacker was removed, they took control of the tilting aircraft, leveled it out, and safely diverted the flight to Tabuk Airport in northern Saudi Arabia.
Following the emergency landing, the co-pilot was detained by Saudi authorities, and both pilots were hospitalized. The passengers were later flown to Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel on a replacement Flydubai aircraft.
